AFCAT Eligibility 2027 Age Limit Qualification and Branch Wise Rules

Quick summary

AFCAT eligibility for 2027, branch by branch: age limits for Flying and Ground Duty, the degree each branch accepts, and the AFCAT 02/2026 change that removed the 60% minimum. Also covers rules for final-year students, marital status, and the mistakes that get applications rejected.

Thousands of aspiring Indian Air Force officers check their AFCAT eligibility before the notification is out. Many find a disqualifying gap only after months of preparation. The rules differ across Flying, Ground Duty (Technical) and Ground Duty (Non-Technical). A single misread on your age window, degree type or Class 12 subjects can end an application before it begins.

This guide covers every eligibility condition from the latest AFCAT notification (02/2026), including the major change that cycle brought to the percentage rule. It also lists what to recheck when the AFCAT notification 2027 goes live.

What Is AFCAT and Who Can Apply?

The Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) is the Indian Air Force officer entry route for graduates. It is held twice a year. An IAF commission through AFCAT is open to men and women across three groups of branches:

  • Flying Branch: for candidates who want to serve as pilots.

  • Ground Duty (Technical): Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics) and Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanical), for engineering graduates.

  • Ground Duty (Non-Technical): Administration, Accounts, Logistics, Education, Meteorology and Weapon Systems.

There are two special routes as well:

  • NCC Special Entry: for NCC Air Wing ‘C’ certificate holders. It takes 10% of Flying seats and has no written exam.

  • GATE Score Entry: for selected Technical Branch vacancies.

Both 2027 cycles are expected to follow the pattern of the 2026 notifications. The 01/2027 notice is expected around November 2026, with the exam in late January or early February 2027. The 02/2027 cycle usually opens around May. Confirm every date in the official notice.

AFCAT Age Limit 2027: Branch-Wise Breakdown

The AFCAT age limit is measured on the date the course begins, not the date you apply. That is 1 January for the 01 cycle and 1 July for the 02 cycle.

Branch

Age Limit

Projected Birth Window for AFCAT 01/2027

Flying

20 to 24 years

2 Jan 2004 to 1 Jan 2008

Flying (valid DGCA Commercial Pilot Licence)

Up to 26 years

2 Jan 2002 to 1 Jan 2008

Ground Duty (Technical and Non-Technical)

20 to 26 years

2 Jan 2002 to 1 Jan 2008

The birth windows are projected by moving the 01/2026 windows forward one year, since that course starts in January 2028. Treat them as a guide until the official notice confirms them.

AFCAT Age Relaxation: What Actually Applies

AFCAT age relaxation is very narrow. The only one is for Flying Branch: candidates with a valid Commercial Pilot Licence can apply up to age 26.

There is no OBC, SC or ST age relaxation in AFCAT, unlike most civilian central government exams. Assuming there is one is a common way candidates apply outside their window and get rejected.

Widows, widowers and divorcees do not get any relaxation either. If they are under 25, they are not eligible at all (see marital status below).

AFCAT Educational Qualification: The 60% Rule Has Changed

For years, AFCAT required at least 60% in graduation and 50% each in Physics and Mathematics at Class 12. The AFCAT 02/2026 notification removed the minimum percentage criteria for both Class 12 and graduation. A candidate with 55% in graduation who meets the subject rules can now apply.

Two things have not changed:

  • Subjects still matter. Flying, Technical and Weapon Systems all need Physics and Mathematics at Class 12.

  • The degree type still matters. Each branch accepts only specific degrees, as the table below shows.

Before you rely on the old AFCAT 60 percent aggregate requirement either way, check whether each new notice keeps the 02/2026 change.

AFCAT Eligibility for Flying Branch

AFCAT eligibility for Flying Branch rests on three conditions:

  • You must have Physics and Mathematics at 10+2. This holds even if your graduation is in arts or commerce.

  • You must be within the 20 to 24 age window, or up to 26 with a valid CPL.

  • You must never have failed the CPSS or PABT pilot aptitude test before. Failing either in an earlier attempt, or being suspended from flying training at the Air Force Academy, rules you out of Flying for life.

Flying has the fewest seats. AFCAT 02/2026 had just 35 Flying vacancies, 5 of them for women. Most Flying aspirants list a Ground Duty branch as a second preference.

AFCAT Technical Branch Qualification: Is a B.Tech Mandatory?

Yes. The AFCAT technical branch qualification is a four-year engineering degree, or AMIE equivalent, in a discipline listed for that post. This applies to both Aeronautical Engineer (Electronics) and Aeronautical Engineer (Mechanical).

A student with PCM at Class 12 but no engineering degree cannot apply for the Technical Branch. That student can still apply for Flying, Weapon Systems or the general non-technical branches.

The separate Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT) did not appear in the 02/2026 notice. Eligible GATE scorers can also enter through the GATE Score Entry route, which had 26 Technical seats that cycle.

Can Final-Year Students Apply for AFCAT?

Yes. Final-year students can apply if they have no current backlog. You must submit proof of your degree by the date the notification sets. In the 02/2026 cycle, that date was about a month before training began.

If you miss that deadline, your candidature lapses even after clearing AFSB, so plan your final exams and result dates around it.

Marital Status, Nationality and Other Conditions

These rules apply to every branch:

  • Nationality: You must be an Indian citizen under the Citizenship Act, 1955.

  • Marital status: Candidates under 25 must be unmarried when the course begins. Widows, widowers and divorcees under 25 are not eligible. Married candidates over 25 can apply but get no married accommodation during training.

  • Marriage during training: A cadet who marries during training is discharged and must repay what the government spent on them.

  • Past removal or debarment: Anyone removed from NDA, IMA, AFA, INA or OTA for indiscipline cannot apply. Neither can anyone debarred by the Ministry of Defence from holding a commission.

  • Criminal record: Candidates facing criminal charges are not eligible. Hiding such facts is a common cause of AFSB interview disqualification or rejection at verification.

Common AFCAT Eligibility Mistakes

  1. Using the wrong age reference date. Age is counted on the course start date, not the application date.

  2. Assuming caste-based age relaxation. AFCAT has none. The only relaxation is for CPL holders in Flying.

  3. Applying for Technical without an engineering degree. PCM at Class 12 alone is not enough.

  4. Missing Physics and Mathematics at 10+2. This rules you out of Flying, Technical and Weapon Systems, whatever your degree.

  5. Picking a degree-specific branch with the wrong degree. Accounts, Education and Meteorology each accept only certain degrees.

  6. Ignoring the marital status rule. It applies to every branch for candidates under 25, not just Flying.

  7. Relying on old percentage rules. The 60% minimum was removed in 02/2026, but check each new notice.

How to Check the Official AFCAT 2027 Notification

The notice and application link are published on the official AFCAT portal, afcat.edcil.co.in. When the PDF is out, check these before you fill in a single field:

  1. The exact date-of-birth window for your branch.

  2. Whether the minimum percentage rule is still removed.

  3. The discipline list for your Technical, Accounts, Education or Meteorology entry.

  4. That Physics and Mathematics appear on your Class 12 marksheet, if you’re applying for Flying, Technical or Weapon Systems.

  5. The final-year degree submission deadline, if you’re still studying.

  6. The application dates, fee, and any change to the exam pattern.

FAQs

What is the age limit for AFCAT 2027 Flying Branch?

20 to 24 years on the date the course begins. Holders of a valid DGCA Commercial Pilot Licence can apply up to 26. Confirm the exact date-of-birth window in the official notification for your cycle.

Can a final-year student apply for AFCAT?

Yes, if you have no current backlog. You must submit proof of your degree by the date set in the notification, which in AFCAT 02/2026 was about a month before training began.

Is there age relaxation for OBC or SC/ST candidates in AFCAT?

No. AFCAT has no caste-based age relaxation. The only relaxation is for Flying Branch candidates holding a valid Commercial Pilot Licence, whose upper limit rises to 26.

Can a PCM student without a B.Tech apply for the Technical Branch?

No. Ground Duty (Technical) needs a four-year engineering degree, or AMIE equivalent, in a discipline listed in the notification. A PCM graduate without an engineering degree can still apply for Flying or the non-technical branches.

Is 60% still required for AFCAT?

Not as of AFCAT 02/2026, which removed the minimum percentage criteria for Class 12 and graduation. You still need the right subjects and degree for your branch. Check whether the change continues in each new notification.

Can married candidates apply for AFCAT?

Candidates under 25 must be unmarried when the course begins, and widows, widowers and divorcees under 25 are not eligible. Married candidates over 25 can apply but get no married accommodation during training
