Agniveer Vayu vs Airmen Group Y Medical Assistant: Which IAF Entry Is Right for You?
Quick summary
PCB or PCM? Agniveer Vayu and Airmen Group Y Medical Assistant appear in the same IAF notification but lead to very different careers. Compare eligibility, service terms and benefits to choose the right entry.
Every year, thousands of PCB students land on the IAF application page and hit the same question: does Biology qualify them for the Air Force, and if so, which entry is open to them? The confusion makes sense. Agniveer Vayu and Airmen Group Y Medical Assistant appear in the same IAF intake notification, but they are completely different schemes with different subjects, service terms and career paths.
This guide compares both side by side so you can decide with confidence instead of guessing from forum threads.
What Are Agniveer Vayu and Airmen Group Y? (Quick Overview)
Both entries are released together in each IAF intake notification, but they lead to very different careers.
Agniveer Vayu is a 4-year contractual service under the Agnipath scheme IAF. It’s open to unmarried men and women.
Airmen Group Y Medical Assistant is a regular airman post with a 20-year service tenure. It’s open to unmarried male Indian and Gorkha (Nepal) candidates only.
A note on intake numbers: IAF intakes are named by training year, not notification year. For example, notifications released in 2026 were for Intakes 01/2027 and 02/2027. The next IAF intake notification (Intake 01/2028) is expected around January 2027.
Agniveer Vayu Streams: Science and Other Than Science
Agniveer Vayu candidates apply under a stream, not a specific trade. Trades are allotted later based on the IAF’s requirements, so there’s no fixed Agniveer Vayu trades list 2026 to choose from at the application stage.
Science stream (for Agniveer Vayu science stream trades), any one of:
10+2 with Physics, Maths and English, 50% aggregate and 50% in English
3-year engineering diploma with 50% aggregate and 50% in English
2-year vocational course with Physics and Maths, meeting the same marks criteria
Other than Science stream:
10+2 in any stream with 50% aggregate and 50% in English
Exam: Science candidates take a 60-minute test (English, Physics, Maths). Other than Science candidates take a 45-minute test (English, Reasoning and General Awareness).
Important for PCB students: Biology does not count toward the Science stream. Without Maths, a PCB student can only apply under Other than Science.
