What Are RIMC and Sainik Schools?

Rashtriya Indian Military College Dehradun is a single residential college, founded in 1922, that admits a small batch of cadets each term. It takes students from Class 8 to Class 12, about five years of schooling built entirely around preparing for the NDA.

Sainik Schools are a national network run by the Sainik Schools Society under the Ministry of Defence. Besides the 33 original Sainik Schools, the government’s expansion programme has approved New Sainik Schools run in partnership with states, private bodies and NGOs. For 2026-27, AISSEE admitted Class 6 students to 69 of these new schools as well as the 33 originals.

Both share three traits:

  • residential, disciplined campuses

  • a stated aim of preparing students for the NDA

  • oversight under the Ministry of Defence

Eligibility: Age, Class and Gender

RIMC admission eligibility:

  • The child must be studying in or have passed Class 7.

  • From the December 2026 exam onward, the child must be 12½ to 14 years old on the date the term begins (1 January or 1 July). Earlier cycles used 11½ to 13 years, so don’t rely on older guides.

  • Both boys and girls are eligible.

Sainik School eligibility:

  • Class 6: age 10 to 12 on 31 March of the admission year, and studying in Class 5.

  • Class 9: age 13 to 15 on 31 March, and passed Class 8 by the time of admission.

  • Girls: they can apply for Class 6 in every school, and for Class 9 where vacancies exist.

The question of which is better, RIMC or Sainik School for NDA, often comes down to timing first. A child in Class 4 or 5 can target Sainik School Class 6. A child in Class 7 can target RIMC. Many families prepare for both.

Admission Process: RIMC Entrance Exam vs AISSEE

RIMC holds its entrance exam twice a year:

  • the June exam for the January term

  • the December exam for the July term

From the December 2026 cycle, applications are entirely online on the NTA portal, and the written exam is held at NTA centres across India. The December 2026 exam (for the July 2027 term) is on 6 December 2026. The next cycle, for the January 2028 term, is expected in mid-2027.

Selection has three stages:

  1. Written exam

  2. Viva voce

  3. Medical examination

The All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination (AISSEE) is conducted by NTA once a year:

  • The AISSEE 2027 exam is expected on 31 January 2027.

  • Registration usually opens a few months before the exam.

Candidates are ranked on merit lists, then go through e-counselling and a medical examination. Most seats in the 33 original Sainik Schools are reserved by home state and category, so domicile matters a great deal.

AISSEE is an offline OMR exam with no negative marking. To qualify, candidates have needed 25% in each subject and 40% overall. SC and ST candidates applying to the 33 original schools are exempt from these minimums.

Seats and Fees

RIMC takes only a few dozen cadets per term, spread across states, which makes it one of the most selective schools in India. Sainik Schools admit thousands each year across the network.

Sainik school fees vary by school. They are generally lower than those of private residential schools, and many state governments offer scholarships to students from their state. RIMC’s fees are higher, though some states also support their RIMC cadets. Check the current fee structure on rimc.edu.in and on each Sainik School’s own website. Both change from year to year.

Career Outcomes: NDA and Beyond

Both schools exist to feed the NDA, and both are among the best-known NDA pipeline schools in India.

  • RIMC: the focus is narrower and more intense. With a tiny batch and five years of military-style routine, much of campus life points toward the Services Selection Board.

  • Sainik Schools: they send far more students to the NDA in absolute numbers because of their size. Many alumni also go into other services and civilian careers.

The key point for every parent: neither school guarantees an NDA seat. Students from both must clear the UPSC NDA examination and the SSB on their own after Class 12, just like any other candidate.

Which Is Right for Your Child?

Choose RIMC if:

  • your child is in Class 7 and fits the new 12½ to 14 age band

  • your child is strong in Maths and English writing

  • your family is committed to a single, intensive military track

Choose a Sainik School if:

  • your child is in Class 5 (for Class 6 entry) or Class 8 (for Class 9 entry)

  • you want a school closer to home

  • you want a wider network of seats, or need state scholarships

Consider both if your child’s age fits. Sitting AISSEE for Class 6 and later the RIMC exam is a common route, and the preparation overlaps in Maths and English.
