Indian Army TGC: Technical Graduate Course Eligibility and Selection
Want to join the Army as an engineer without a written exam? Check Indian Army TGC eligibility, the 20 to 27 age limit, stream-wise vacancies, final year rules, the SSB-based selection process and the latest TGC-145 notification.
If you are an engineering student who wants to become an Army officer without writing a written exam, the Technical Graduate Course (TGC) is one of the most direct routes. You apply with your engineering marks, get shortlisted for the SSB, and if selected, train at the Indian Military Academy for about a year before being commissioned as a Lieutenant.
This guide covers Indian Army TGC eligibility in detail, the selection process step by step, and the latest notification, so you know exactly where you stand.
What Is TGC?
TGC is a Permanent Commission entry for engineers into the Indian Army. The Army runs two TGC courses a year at IMA Dehradun, one starting in January and one in July. Each course has a number, such as TGC-144, and is notified on the official website, joinindianarmy.nic.in, roughly eight to ten months before it starts.
There is no entrance exam. Shortlisting is done on the basis of your engineering marks, after which you attend the Services Selection Board (SSB).
Indian Army TGC Eligibility at a Glance
Indian Army TGC eligibility rests on five conditions:
TGC is open only to men. Women engineers who want to join the Army as officers can apply through the Short Service Commission (Technical) entry instead.
TGC Age Limit Explained
The TGC age limit is 20 to 27 years, counted on the first day of the month the course begins. For example, for the course beginning in July 2027, the age is counted as on 1 July 2027.
The notification turns this into an exact birth-date range. Always match your date of birth, as written on your Class 10 certificate, with that range before applying. Being even one day outside it makes you ineligible for that course.
This is a wide window. Since there are two courses every year, most engineers can apply several times, from their final year of engineering until they turn 27.
Educational Qualification and Engineering Streams
You need a BE or BTech degree in one of the engineering streams listed in the notification. Each course has a fixed number of seats for each stream. For TGC-145, the tentative vacancies are:
Each main stream also covers a list of related branches. For example, an IT degree may be counted under computer science. The notification gives the full list, so check where your branch fits before you apply. If your branch is not listed at all, you cannot apply for that course.
Final year students: You can apply while in your final year of engineering. You must pass your degree by the date given in the notification, and produce the degree certificate within 12 weeks of the start of training at IMA. Candidates who miss this deadline can lose their place.
TGC Selection Process: Step by Step
The process has four main stages:
-
Online application: Apply on joinindianarmy.nic.in during the open window. There is no application fee.
-
Shortlisting by marks: Army Headquarters fixes a cut-off percentage for each engineering stream. Candidates above that cut-off are called for the SSB.
-
SSB interview: A five-day process at one of the Selection Centres in Prayagraj (Allahabad), Bhopal, Bengaluru or Jalandhar. Stage I is a screening test. Those who clear it stay for Stage II, which includes psychological tests, group tasks and a personal interview.
-
Medical examination and merit list: Candidates recommended by the SSB go through a detailed medical examination. A stream-wise merit list is then prepared, and seats are filled in order of merit.
How the TGC Cut Off Works
The cut-off is not a fixed number. Army Headquarters sets it separately for each stream in each course, depending on how many people apply and how many seats are on offer. A stream with very few seats, such as Electrical with only two in the latest course, may need a higher percentage to get through.
The Army does not publish these cut-offs in advance, and figures shared online for past courses are not official. The safest approach is simple: keep your engineering marks as high as possible from the early semesters onwards, because they decide whether you reach the SSB at all.
Training at IMA Dehradun
Selected candidates join the academy for about one year of pre-commission training. As per recent notifications, cadets receive a stipend of ₹56,100 per month during training.
On completing training, you are commissioned as a Lieutenant. TGC officers also get one year of ante-date seniority, which means their seniority is counted as if they were commissioned a year earlier. After commissioning, officers are paid at Level 10 of the pay matrix, plus Military Service Pay and other allowances.
Latest Update: TGC-145 Notification
The Army has released the notification for the next course, beginning in July 2027. Key points:
-
Applications: Open from 30 September 2026 to 29 October 2026 (until 3 pm, as per reports).
-
Vacancies: 30 in total, split by stream as shown above.
-
Age: 20 to 27 years as on 1 July 2027.
-
SSB dates: Interviews are expected between December 2026 and February 2027.
Check the full notification on joinindianarmy.nic.in before applying, as the exact birth-date range and stream list are given there.
How to Prepare Once You Apply
Since there is no written exam, your preparation is entirely for the SSB:
-
Know your stream well: In the interview, you may be asked about your engineering subjects and final-year project. Be ready to explain them simply.
-
Practise the screening tests: The Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) test and the Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT) decide who stays for Stage II.
-
Build physical fitness: Group tasks and the medical exam both need a fit body. Start running and basic strength work early.
-
Fill your application carefully: Your percentage and stream details must match your marks sheets exactly, as they are checked later.
