Indian Armed Forces Ranks: Army, Navy and Air Force Equivalents
Quick summary
A complete guide to Indian Army, Navy and Air Force ranks, with a side-by-side equivalence table, JCO ranks, insignia details and where the CDS fits.
Most defence aspirants can name a General or an Admiral, but ask which Navy rank matches an Army Major and the answer gets uncertain. Knowing the rank structure and how it maps across the three services helps you read an SSB panel, recognise your future seniors and understand career progression before you enter a selection centre. This guide gives the full hierarchy for each service, an equivalence table, a plain explanation of JCOs and insignia details.
Why Rank Structure Matters for Aspirants
Rank knowledge helps in three practical ways:
Choosing your entry route. Agniveer enters at the sepoy level, while NDA, CDS, AFCAT and similar exams lead to a commission.
Understanding command. SSB assessors may ask you how the chain of command works.
Comparing careers across services. The equivalence table shows which Navy or Air Force rank matches an Army rank.
For formal details, always verify on the official Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force websites.
Indian Army Rank Structure
The Army has three tiers: Other Ranks, Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and Commissioned Officers.
Other Ranks (4): Sepoy, Lance Naik, Naik, Havildar
JCOs (3): Naib Subedar, Subedar, Subedar Major
Commissioned Officers (9): Lieutenant, Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel, Colonel, Brigadier, Major General, Lieutenant General, General
That makes 16 grades. Field Marshal sits above them as an honorary five-star rank and is not part of the regular promotion ladder.
An NDA, IMA or OTA graduate is commissioned as a Lieutenant. A Lieutenant is promoted to Captain after two years of commissioned service, and to Major after six years.
Indian Navy Rank Structure
Sailors (7 ranks): Seaman II, Seaman I, Leading Seaman, Petty Officer, Chief Petty Officer, Master Chief Petty Officer II, Master Chief Petty Officer I.
The senior three (CPO, MCPO II and MCPO I) are the Navy’s equivalent of the Army’s JCO tier.
Commissioned officers: Sub Lieutenant, Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander, Commander, Captain, Commodore, Rear Admiral, Vice Admiral, Admiral. Admiral of the Fleet is a five-star rank that has never been conferred.
Indian Air Force Rank Structure
Airmen: Aircraftman, Leading Aircraftman, Corporal, Sergeant, Junior Warrant Officer, Warrant Officer, Master Warrant Officer. The last three are the IAF’s JCO-equivalent tier.
Commissioned officers: Flying Officer, Flight Lieutenant, Squadron Leader, Wing Commander, Group Captain, Air Commodore, Air Vice Marshal, Air Marshal, Air Chief Marshal. Marshal of the Air Force is the five-star rank, held only by Arjan Singh (conferred in 2002).
Rank Equivalence Table: Army, Navy and Air Force
Watch the name clash: an Army Captain is junior to a Major, but a Navy Captain is equivalent to an Army Colonel.
Officer, JCO and Other Ranks: What Aspirants Should Know
Commissioned officers enter through routes such as the NDA, CDS, AFCAT, IMA and OTA, and lead units and formations.
JCOs are promoted from the ranks after long service. They act as senior leaders and a link between officers and soldiers. Agniveer, soldier-entry and similar routes lead to this tier, not to an officer’s commission.
Other ranks are the soldiers, sailors and airmen at the base of the structure.
All three services have a JCO-equivalent tier, though the titles differ. The Navy’s is MCPO and CPO, and the IAF’s is the warrant officer ranks.
Insignia Explained
Army. Stars and the national emblem on the shoulder:
Lieutenant: two stars
Captain: three stars
Major: national emblem
Lieutenant Colonel: emblem and one star
Colonel: emblem and two stars
Brigadier: emblem above three stars in a triangle
Major General: crossed sword and baton above a star
Lieutenant General: national emblem over a crossed sword and baton
Field Marshal: national emblem over a crossed baton and sabre in a lotus wreath
Navy. Officers’ rank is shown by gold sleeve stripes. In the executive branch, the top stripe has a loop. Flag officers (Rear Admiral and above) also wear gorget patches with two, three or four stars for Rear Admiral, Vice Admiral and Admiral.
Air Force. Rank is worn on stripes in IAF colours rather than Army-style stars. Check the official IAF page for the exact stripe combinations before relying on them.
Where Does the Chief of Defence Staff Fit?
The Chief of Defence Staff holds four-star rank, like the three service chiefs. The CDS is the permanent Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee and heads the Department of Military Affairs. The CDS insignia combines crossed swords (Army), an anchor (Navy) and eagle wings (Air Force) under the Ashoka Lion capital.
FAQs
Which Indian Air Force rank is equivalent to an Army Major?
Squadron Leader. A Major in the Army is equivalent to a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy and a Squadron Leader in the Air Force. The next rank up, Lieutenant Colonel, matches Commander and Wing Commander.
What is the highest rank in each service?
The five-star ranks are Field Marshal in the Army, Admiral of the Fleet in the Navy and Marshal of the Air Force in the IAF. They are honorary and rarely conferred. Only two Field Marshals (Sam Manekshaw and K. M. Cariappa) and one Marshal of the Air Force (Arjan Singh) have held them, and Admiral of the Fleet has never been conferred. In regular service, the highest ranks are General, Admiral and Air Chief Marshal.
How many ranks does the Indian Army have?
The regular structure has 16 grades: four Other Ranks, three JCO ranks and nine commissioned ranks. Field Marshal is an additional honorary rank. Some sources count differently, depending on whether they include trainee or honorary designations.
Do the Navy and Air Force have JCOs?
Yes, in equivalent form. In the Air Force, Junior Warrant Officer, Warrant Officer and Master Warrant Officer are the JCO tier. In the Navy, the equivalent tier is Chief Petty Officer and the two Master Chief Petty Officer grades.
Is a Navy Captain the same as an Army Captain?
No. A Navy Captain is equivalent to an Army Colonel and an Air Force Group Captain. The Army Captain matches the Navy Lieutenant and the Air Force Flight Lieutenant.
