Quick summary

The Ministry of Defence has signed contracts worth ₹53,866.50 crore for eight Next Generation Corvettes. GRSE will build five and Goa Shipyard three, in the first project where the Navy designs the ships and defence shipyards build them.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed contracts worth ₹53,866.50 crore on Monday, November 2, 2026, for eight Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) for the Indian Navy. The orders were placed with two defence shipyards: Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) will build five corvettes, and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) will build three.

A first for warship design and construction

According to the MoD, this is the first project in which the Indian Navy itself designs the ships and Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), chosen through a competitive process, build them. The ministry called it a milestone for India’s indigenous warship design and construction capability.

What the corvettes will do

The NGCs will carry advanced missiles, weapons and sensor suites, giving them the ability to operate in the air, on the surface and under the sea. Once they join the fleet, they are expected to:

  • Protect maritime trade routes

  • Carry out anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare

  • Strengthen coastal defence

  • Take part in littoral combat missions

  • Support maritime presence and surveillance in areas of strategic importance

The MoD said their multi-domain capability will give the Navy flexibility to operate in different maritime environments and respond to new security needs.

Jobs and industry

The ministry said the programme will deepen cooperation between defence shipyards, private shipyards, Indian industrial partners and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Over the next ten years, building the eight corvettes is expected to create about 72 lakh person-days of work in the shipyards and another 460 lakh person-days in ancillary industries and MSMEs.

The MoD added that the project will promote Made-in-India materials and equipment, indigenous technologies and Indian skills, and described it as a step towards self-reliance (Aatmanirbharta) in defence manufacturing and the Make in India initiative.
