India's Akash Missile Reaches Central Asia as Turkmenistan Adds It to a China-Made Air Defence Network
Akash missile export has reached Central Asia. India's Defence Secretary has confirmed sales of the Akash air defence system to Turkmenistan and Tajikistan. Turkmenistan will add it to an arsenal that already has several Chinese air defence systems.
New Delhi, 6 October 2026: India's home-grown Akash air defence system has found two new buyers in Central Asia. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh confirmed on 1 October 2026 that India has sold the Akash system to Turkmenistan and Tajikistan. He also said that production of Akash missiles has now stabilised.
This is a notable step for Akash missile export, as Armenia was the only known foreign buyer before this.
What Has Been Confirmed
Neither Turkmenistan nor Tajikistan has made a public announcement about the purchase yet.
Why Turkmenistan's Choice Stands Out
Turkmenistan's air defence is built largely on Chinese equipment. As per the report, its inventory includes:
Adding an Indian system to this mix shows that Turkmenistan is widening its list of suppliers. The country held a military parade on 27 September 2026 to mark 35 years of independence, just days before India's confirmation.
One open question is how the Akash will work alongside the Chinese systems. It is not yet clear whether Turkmenistan plans to link them under a single command and control network or run them separately.
Which Version of Akash
The exact version has not been officially stated. Defence experts quoted in the report believe it is likely to be the Akash-1S. This version uses command guidance in the first part of its flight and then an Indian-made active radio-frequency seeker to home in on the target in the final phase.
About the Akash System
-
Type: Surface-to-air missile system for short to medium range air defence
-
Range: About 25 km
-
Capability: Can engage several aerial targets at the same time
-
Developed by: Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)
-
Made by: Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL)

Why This Matters
-
Boost for defence exports: More buyers mean more confidence in Indian-made weapons under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat push.
-
A new region: Central Asia has traditionally bought from Russia and China, so entry here is significant for India.
-
Steady production: The Defence Secretary's remark that production has stabilised suggests India can now meet both its own needs and export orders.
