CDS Attempts: How Many Times Can You Appear Before Age Runs Out?
There is no fixed limit on CDS attempts. Your chances depend on the age window for IMA, INA, AFA or OTA and when you reach your final year of graduation. Learn how to calculate your remaining CDS attempts and avoid losing one.
“How many CDS attempts do I have left?” is one of the most common questions graduate aspirants ask, and one of the most commonly answered wrong. There is no fixed number of attempts in the CDS exam. UPSC does not count how many times you have appeared. What limits you is your age, the academy you choose, your graduation year and, for some entries, your marital status.
This guide explains the rule, shows you how to work out your own remaining attempts, and points out the mistakes that quietly reduce them.
The Core Rule: No Attempt Limit, Only Age Windows
UPSC holds the Combined Defence Services exam twice a year as CDS I and CDS II. CDS I is usually notified around December with the exam around April, and CDS II is usually notified around May with the exam around September.
For every cycle, the notification gives a date of birth window for each academy. If your date of birth falls inside that window and you meet the other conditions, you can apply. It does not matter whether it is your first attempt or your eighth. So the real question is not “how many attempts”, but “how many cycles will my date of birth fit into?”
CDS Age Limit for Each Academy
The cds age limit is different for each academy. As per the recent notifications, it works out like this:
Age is counted on the date the course begins, not on the exam date. UPSC converts it into an exact birth-date range in each notification. For example, the CDS II 2026 notification was open for IMA and INA to men born between 2 July 2003 and 1 July 2008, and for OTA to candidates born between 2 July 2002 and 1 July 2008.
Two things follow from this table:
-
The IMA age limit is one year tighter than OTA: You can stay eligible for OTA for one more year (two more cycles) after your IMA window closes.
-
AFA has the shortest window: It starts a year later than IMA and ends at the same point, so it gives the fewest cycles unless you hold a Commercial Pilot Licence.
At present, women can apply through CDS only for OTA. If you are a woman aspirant, see our guide on CDS for women for the full OTA route.
How Many CDS Attempts Are Possible by Age?
Because UPSC holds two exams a year, a five-year window means ten cycles by age alone:
-
IMA and INA: Up to 10 cycles
-
OTA: Up to 12 cycles
-
AFA: Up to 8 cycles (more for CPL holders)
But almost no one gets all of these. The cds eligibility criteria also require a graduation degree, and that is what cuts the number down.
The Graduation Factor: Final Year Students
You can apply for CDS while you are in the final year of your degree. CDS final year students must not have any backlog, and they must submit proof of passing by the date set in the notification, which is linked to the start of the course.
This rule is the biggest single boost to your attempt count. If you wait until your degree is complete, you lose one or two cycles you could have used.
Even so, most aspirants reach their final year at around 20 or 21, after two or three years of their age window have already passed. Engineering students usually graduate a year later, which reduces their cycles further.
How to Calculate Your Remaining CDS Attempts
Follow these five steps:
-
Note your date of birth: Use the date on your Class 10 certificate.
-
Pick your academies: Decide which academies you are eligible for and want: IMA, INA, AFA, OTA or a mix.
-
Check each cycle’s window: For each upcoming CDS I and CDS II, check whether your date of birth falls in that academy’s window. Each new cycle shifts the window forward by six months.
-
Remove cycles before your final year: Strike out any cycle whose application closes before you enter the final year of your degree.
-
Count what is left: That is your real number of attempts for that academy.
Worked example: An aspirant born on 15 March 2004 is in the final year of a three-year degree during 2025-26.
As of October 2026, this aspirant has already used two of those cycles. Only one attempt is left for IMA, but three are left for OTA. This is why many graduates keep OTA in their preference list even when IMA is their first choice.
Mistakes That Quietly Cost You Attempts
-
Waiting for your degree to finish: Applying only after graduation instead of in your final year wastes one or two cycles.
-
Skipping a cycle to “prepare better”: Each skipped cycle is gone for good. Even an underprepared attempt teaches you the paper and the pressure.
-
Ignoring OTA: If you only list IMA, your attempts end a year earlier than they need to. You can choose more than one academy in a single application.
-
Getting married too early: IMA, INA and OTA for men require you to be unmarried, and so does AFA below 25. Marriage before your final attempt can end your eligibility for these entries.
-
Trusting rough age maths: Always check the exact birth-date window in the notification. Being one day outside it makes you ineligible for that cycle.
Do SSB Attempts Count Separately?
There is no separate limit on how many times you can attend an SSB through CDS. Each time you clear the written exam, you get a fresh SSB call for that cycle. What you cannot do is carry a written result from one cycle to the next. Every attempt starts with the written exam again.
FAQs
Is there a limit on the number of CDS attempts?
No. UPSC does not limit how many times you can appear for CDS. You can apply in every cycle as long as your date of birth falls within the age window for your academy and you meet the education and marital status rules.
What is the age limit for CDS OTA?
The CDS OTA age limit is 19 to 25 years, counted on the date the course begins. This is one year more than IMA and INA, so OTA gives you two extra cycles.
Can final year students apply for CDS?
Yes. Final year students without a backlog can apply, but they must submit proof of passing their degree by the date given in the notification.
How many CDS attempts does a typical graduate get?
Most graduates who start applying in their final year get around three to four attempts for IMA and two more for OTA, depending on their date of birth and graduation year.
Can women apply for IMA through CDS?
At present, women can apply through CDS only for OTA. Check each new notification, as eligibility rules can change.
