Quick summary

Learn how Agniveer pay works: the year-wise package, what you actually receive in hand, how the ₹11.71 lakh Seva Nidhi is built, and what happens after four years.

The Agnipath scheme offers a four-year engagement with a fixed pay structure that is the same across the Army, Navy and Air Force. Many aspirants misunderstand it. The monthly figure you see is not your in-hand pay, and the Seva Nidhi is not a pension. This guide explains each part.

Agniveer Salary: Year-Wise Package

Agniveers receive a “customised package” that rises each year. Only 70% reaches your bank account. The other 30% goes into your Agniveer Corpus Fund, and the Government of India adds an equal amount.

Some websites print the third-year in-hand figure as ₹25,580 because of a rounding error in an early table. 70% of ₹36,500 is ₹25,550.

Over four years the package adds up to about ₹16.74 lakh (₹3.6 lakh, ₹3.96 lakh, ₹4.38 lakh and ₹4.8 lakh a year).

Allowances

The package is paid together with other allowances as applicable, including Risk and Hardship allowance, ration, dress and travel allowance. Agniveers do not receive gratuity or pension under the scheme.

Seva Nidhi: How the ₹11.71 Lakh Is Calculated

  • Your 30% contribution over four years comes to about ₹5.02 lakh.

  • The Government matches it with another ₹5.02 lakh.

  • Interest accumulates on the total at the applicable rate.

  • The result is a one-time payment of about ₹11.71 lakh when you complete the four years.

The Seva Nidhi is exempt from income tax. The exact amount depends on the interest rate applied, so treat ₹11.71 lakh as the scheme figure, not a guaranteed amount.

Insurance and Leave

The scheme documents mention a non-contributory life insurance cover of ₹48 lakh and 30 days of annual leave, with medical leave on medical advice. Confirm the current terms in your enrolment documents.

Pay Compared With a Regular Sepoy

An Agniveer’s package is a fixed consolidated amount, while a regular soldier receives pay-scale emoluments, pension and gratuity. If you only compare monthly pay, the Agniveer figure can look competitive. The real difference is long-term security: an Agniveer who is not retained has no pension. Weigh the tax-free lump sum against the pension you would receive as a regular soldier.

What Happens After Four Years

All Agniveers complete the four-year engagement. A portion, officially about 25% of each batch, is enrolled into the regular cadre based on merit, willingness and medical fitness. The remaining Agniveers leave with the Seva Nidhi and a skill certificate.

Time-sensitive: check before publishing or updating. The first batch completes its tenure from around December 2026. Media reports say the government is considering retaining a larger share than 25%, but nothing has been officially announced. Update this section when the policy is confirmed.

Is Agniveer Right for You?

Agniveer suits you if you want early military experience, a tax-free lump sum at about age 22 to 25, and a chance to stay in service by earning a place in the retained quota. It may not suit you if you need a pension-backed career from day one. Many candidates plan for both outcomes by building a post-service skill or study path while serving.
