Clearing the NDA written exam is a proud moment, and it opens the door to the next part of your journey. Many candidates, however, are not fully sure what comes next, how long it takes, or how to prepare for each stage.

This guide explains the NDA selection process after the written exam in simple steps. It covers SSB registration, the five-day SSB interview, the medical examination, the final merit list, and joining the academy. We have also included an expected timeline for 2027 and some helpful guidance if things don't go as planned.

After the written exam, qualified candidates register on joinindianarmy.nic.in within two weeks of the result. They then attend a five-day SSB interview. Recommended candidates go through a medical examination, and the final merit list is prepared from written and SSB marks (out of 1,800). Selected candidates then join NDA Khadakwasla or INA Ezhimala. Step 1: Written Result and Shortlisting

UPSC publishes the written result as a PDF containing the roll numbers of qualified candidates. If your roll number is on the list, you have been shortlisted for the SSB interview.

To give you an idea of the numbers: in NDA 1 2026, 7,903 candidates qualified the written exam for 394 vacancies. That means roughly one in twenty shortlisted candidates finally gets selected. The SSB stage therefore plays a very important role in the final outcome.

Step 2: SSB Registration After the Written Result

This is the first and most important task in the NDA selection process after the written exam.

• Register on the Indian Army recruitment website, joinindianarmy.nic.in, within two weeks of the result. This applies to all candidates, including those who prefer the Navy or Air Force.

• If you registered on the portal in an earlier attempt, you don't need to register again.

• Your SSB centre and date will be shared through your registered email ID. Please check your inbox, including the spam folder, regularly.

It's a good idea to keep your email and phone number active and unchanged throughout the process.

Step 3: The Five-Day SSB Interview

The SSB (Services Selection Board) interview checks whether you have the Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) needed in the Armed Forces, such as reasoning, responsibility, teamwork and confidence. It is not a knowledge test, so there are no "right answers" to memorise. Assessors look for your natural thinking and behaviour.

Day 1: Screening (Stage 1). You take the OIR (Officer Intelligence Rating) test, which has verbal and non-verbal reasoning questions. This is followed by the PPDT (Picture Perception and Discussion Test): you write a short story based on a picture and then discuss it in a group. Candidates who clear screening stay for Stage 2. Others return home the same day.

Day 2: Psychology tests. These include the TAT (Thematic Apperception Test), where you write stories on pictures, and the WAT (Word Association Test), where you write sentences on words shown one after another. There is also the SRT (Situation Reaction Test), where you respond to everyday situations, and the SD (Self-Description), where you describe yourself as your parents, teachers and friends see you.

Days 3 and 4: GTO tasks. The GTO (Group Testing Officer) conducts group discussions, a group planning exercise, outdoor group tasks, individual obstacles, a command task and a short lecturette. These tasks show how you work with others and handle responsibility.

Personal interview. An interviewing officer talks with you about your family, education, interests and current affairs. It is usually held on one of the days between Day 2 and Day 4.

Day 5: Conference. All assessors meet each candidate briefly and discuss their overall performance. Results are announced the same day, and candidates are either recommended or not recommended.

Step 4: CPSS for Air Force Candidates

Candidates who opt for the Air Force flying branch also take the CPSS (Computerised Pilot Selection System). It tests the coordination and quick decision-making needed for flying. Clearing CPSS is required for the Air Force. Candidates generally get only one chance at it, so it's worth reading about the test format beforehand.

Step 5: Medical Examination

Recommended candidates go through a Special Medical Board (SMB) at a Military Hospital, which usually takes four to five days. NDA candidates are generally examined for both the Army and the Navy. The checks include eyes, ears, teeth, height and weight, blood tests, X-rays and a general physical examination.

At the end, candidates are declared fit, temporarily unfit or permanently unfit.

• Appeal Medical Board (AMB): Candidates declared unfit can apply for an AMB. It must be done within 42 days of the SMB. This time is often used to correct issues such as weight.

• Review Medical Board (RMB): If a candidate is found unfit again at the AMB, an RMB may be granted. It is not automatic; senior medical authorities approve it.

Step 6: NDA Final Merit List

The NDA final merit list is prepared by UPSC using your total marks:

A few points to understand:

• You must clear the written exam and the SSB separately. A high written score cannot make up for a "not recommended" result.

• Seats are allotted on merit-cum-preference. Your rank and your service preference (Army, Navy or Air Force) together decide your wing.

• Final selection also depends on medical fitness and the number of vacancies.

For reference, the NDA 1 2025 final merit list was released on 10 October 2025 with 735 candidates. The NDA 2 2025 list came on 8 April 2026 with 742 candidates.

Step 7: Joining the Academy

Selected candidates receive joining instructions from the respective service headquarters. Army, Navy and Air Force cadets train together at the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla (Pune). Naval Academy (10+2 Cadet Entry) candidates join the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala (Kerala).

Documents to Carry to the SSB

Please keep these ready and organised in a folder:

• Original Class 10 certificate (age proof)

• Class 12 marksheet and certificate, or proof that you are appearing

• The SSB call letter and your NDA admit card

• An original photo ID and a few passport-size photographs

• Any other documents mentioned in your call letter

Original certificates are checked at the SSB centre. They should not be sent to UPSC.

If You Are Not Recommended

It's completely normal to feel disappointed, but a single SSB result does not decide your future. Many officers were recommended on their second or third attempt.

• Reflect honestly on each stage and note where you felt less confident.

• Check your age eligibility for the next NDA attempt and apply on time.

Helpful Tips to Prepare for the SSB

The gap between the written result and the SSB is usually a few weeks. You can use this time well:

• Read a newspaper daily and form your own opinions on major issues.

• Practise writing short stories and sentences within a time limit for the psychology tests.

• Go for a daily run and basic exercises, since GTO tasks are physically active.

• Know your own background well: your school, hometown, hobbies and achievements.

• Stay natural. Assessors value genuine responses over rehearsed answers.
