Indian Army Women Officer Entry 2027: Available Schemes, Eligibility

Women officer cadets of the Indian Army on parade at the Officers Training Academy, Chennai

Women can join the Indian Army as officers through five main routes: NDA, SSC Non-Technical through CDS, SSCW (Tech), JAG and NCC Special Entry. This guide covers each scheme's eligibility, age limit, training academy and selection process.

Five main routes are open to women who want to serve as commissioned officers in the Indian Army, yet many aspirants apply without knowing all their options. This guide covers each scheme for women officer entry in 2027, maps it to the training academy, and sets out the eligibility conditions, so you can pick the route that fits your qualification.

Latest notification: The SSCW (Tech) entry for the April 2027 course at OTA Chennai was notified in July 2026, with women's applications closing in early August 2026. Other entries are notified separately, so always check joinindianarmy.nic.in and upsc.gov.in for current dates.

Which Entry Schemes Are Open to Women in 2027?

  • NDA (women): permanent commission, after Class 12

  • SSC (Women) Non-Technical: Short Service Commission, any graduate, through the UPSC CDS exam

  • SSCW (Tech): Short Service Commission, engineering graduates

  • JAG Entry: Short Service Commission, law graduates

  • NCC Special Entry (Women): Short Service Commission, graduates with an NCC C Certificate

Short Service Commission is for 10 years, which can be extended up to 14 years. Women SSC officers can be considered for Permanent Commission as per current policy. Other Army entries, such as the medical, dental and nursing services, have their own rules and are not covered here.

Choose Your Entry by Educational Profile

  • 12th pass: NDA is the route after school. The Army wing is open to any stream, while the Navy and Air Force wings need Physics and Mathematics.

  • Any graduation: SSC (Women) Non-Technical through CDS.

  • Engineering degree (BE/B.Tech): SSCW (Tech), which is the technical route.

  • LLB degree (minimum 55%): JAG Entry.

  • Graduation plus NCC C Certificate: NCC Special Entry.

Always confirm the exact degree and marks requirements in the current notification.

Eligibility Criteria for Each Scheme

All candidates must be Indian citizens. Most routes are open to unmarried women. SSCW (Tech) also accepts widows of defence personnel, as the notification specifies. Marriage during training is not permitted.

  • NDA: 16.5 to 19.5 years; Class 12 pass (Physics and Maths for Navy and Air Force wings)

  • SSC Non-Technical (CDS): 19 to 25 years; any recognised degree

  • SSCW (Tech): 20 to 27 years as on the date in the notification; BE/B.Tech in a notified discipline

  • JAG: 21 to 27 years; LLB with at least 55% aggregate

  • NCC Special Entry: 19 to 25 years; graduation with the minimum marks in the notification, and a valid NCC C Certificate with at least B grade

Age limits are counted from the date specified in each notification, so always read the latest one before applying.

Medical and Fitness Standards

Medical standards are set out in the notification for each entry and are checked at the medical board after the SSB. The minimum height for women officer candidates is generally 152 cm, and weight must be proportionate to height per the Army's medical charts. Vision standards depend on the arm or branch, so check the notification.

There is no running or push-up test during the SSB for officer entries. Even so, good fitness matters for the outdoor group tasks at the SSB and for the demanding training that follows. Disclose any medical condition honestly, as concealing one can lead to disqualification.

Where Will You Train?

  • OTA Chennai: Women commissioned through SSC Non-Technical, SSCW (Tech), JAG and NCC Special Entry train here for 49 weeks and are commissioned as Lieutenants.

  • NDA Khadakwasla: Women who join through NDA spend three years here on the joint services curriculum.

  • IMA Dehradun: Women in the Army wing of NDA complete a final year of pre-commission training here after the NDA course.

The Selection Process

The process depends on the scheme:

  1. Application or written exam: For SSCW (Tech), JAG and NCC Special Entry, you apply online on joinindianarmy.nic.in and are shortlisted by the Army. For SSC Non-Technical, you first clear the UPSC CDS written exam, and for NDA, the UPSC NDA written exam.

  2. SSB interview (five days): Day 1 is screening with intelligence tests and picture perception. Days 2 to 4 cover psychological tests, group testing tasks and the personal interview, and Day 5 is the conference.

  3. Medical examination: Recommended candidates go through a detailed medical board.

  4. Merit list and training: The final merit list is published, and selected candidates join the academy.

The SSB is the same for men and women, and only the reporting centres differ.
