Defence Jobs After Graduation: Every Officer Entry Route Beyond CDS and AFCAT

Graduate candidates preparing for SSB interview for Army, Navy and Air Force officer entries beyond CDS and AFCAT

Graduates have more officer routes than CDS and AFCAT. This guide covers Army SSC Tech, TGC, NCC Special Entry and JAG, Navy SSC, UES and NCC, and IAF NCC Special Entry, with eligibility, age limits, training academies and how to choose.

Most graduates looking for defence jobs after graduation stop at CDS and AFCAT. Yet the Army, Navy and Air Force also run several direct officer entries that go straight to the SSB after shortlisting, without any UPSC exam. This guide groups them in one place, with eligibility, age limits and training academies, so you can find the scheme that fits your degree. Always confirm the details in the current notification, as they change from cycle to cycle.

First, What Is (and Isn't) Exam-Free

Direct entries go to the SSB interview after shortlisting on your marks, degree or NCC certificate. Two common mix-ups are worth clearing up:

  • SSC Non-Technical (SSC-NT) for the Army is filled through the UPSC CDS exam and trained at OTA Chennai, so it is not an SSB-only entry.
  • TES is the 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme for students who have passed Class 12 with PCM and appeared in JEE Main. It is not for graduates.

Quick Comparison of Graduate Officer Entries

Entry Who can apply Age (approx.) Selection Commission
Army SSC Tech BE/B.Tech, men and women 20 to 27 Shortlist + SSB SSC (10 years, extendable to 14)
Army TGC BE/B.Tech, men only 20 to 27 Shortlist + SSB Permanent Commission
Army NCC Special Entry Graduates (50%) with NCC C Certificate, B grade minimum 19 to 25 SSB SSC
Army JAG LLB with 55%, men and women 21 to 27 Shortlist + SSB SSC
Navy SSC (Executive/Technical/Education) Degree as per branch (BE/B.Tech with 60% for most) Varies by branch Shortlist on degree marks + SSB SSC
Navy UES Pre-final or final-year engineering students About 21 to 24 Shortlist + SSB As per branch
Navy NCC Special Entry NCC Naval Wing C Certificate About 19 to 24 SSB SSC
IAF NCC Special Entry (Flying) Graduates (60%) with NCC Air Wing C Certificate 20 to 24 SSB, notified with AFCAT SSC

Age limits, marks and branches differ between notifications, so treat this table as a starting point.

Army Officer Entries After Graduation (Without CDS)

SSC Tech (men and women): For engineering graduates in notified streams. Applicants are shortlisted on engineering marks and called for the SSB. Final-year students can apply if they provide proof of passing by the deadline.

TGC (men only): For engineering graduates, with a Permanent Commission and training at IMA Dehradun. Shortlisting is on engineering marks, followed by the SSB.

NCC Special Entry: For graduates with a C Certificate (minimum B grade), a graduation with at least 50 percent, and 2 to 3 years in the NCC Senior Division or Wing. Men's and women's notifications are separate, and selection is based on your record and the SSB, with no written exam. Recent examples include the 125th course (April 2027), with applications from 20 July to 20 August 2026 for men.

JAG (Judge Advocate General Branch): For LLB graduates (3-year or 5-year) with at least 55 percent who are eligible to enrol as advocates. Recent notifications have asked for a valid CLAT PG score. The 125th SSC JAG course (April 2027) took applications from 17 July to 17 August 2026.

SSC NT entry eligibility 2027: For any graduate, but through the CDS exam. Apply on UPSC, not on the Army website.

Army SSC officers train at OTA Chennai for 49 weeks, and TGC officers train at IMA Dehradun.

Indian Navy Officer Entries for Graduates Beyond AFCAT

The Navy runs its own SSC officer entries for the Executive, Technical and Education branches. Most Executive and Technical branches need a BE/B.Tech with at least 60 percent, and candidates are first shortlisted on normalised degree marks before the SSB. The Education branch needs a postgraduate degree, so there is no single "any graduate" Navy entry.

  • University Entry Scheme (UES): For engineering students in their pre-final or final year. Shortlisting, which some cycles do through campus selection, is followed by the SSB.
  • NCC Special Entry (Naval Wing): For C Certificate holders, with a direct SSB and no written test. NCC C Certificate holders also get a 5 percent relaxation in shortlisting cut-offs for the other SSC entries.
  • JAG (Law): The Navy also recruits law graduates through its own law entry.

Navy officers train at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala. The Navy released an SSC officer notification in January 2026, with applications from 24 January to 24 February 2026 for courses from January 2027, so watch joinindiannavy.gov.in for the next one.

Indian Air Force Entries After Graduation

For most graduates, the IAF route is AFCAT. The Flying, Ground Duty (Technical) and Ground Duty (Non-Technical) branches are all filled through it, as is the NCC Special Entry notification.

The one exam-free IAF route is NCC Special Entry (Flying). It needs graduation with 60 percent, Physics and Maths at 10+2, and an NCC Air Wing C Certificate, with an age limit of 20 to 24 years. Candidates are notified alongside AFCAT, and no AFCAT fee applies. The Meteorology Entry is for science postgraduates and is also listed in the AFCAT notification, so check the notification for how it is conducted.

IAF officers train at the Air Force Academy, Dundigal, and Meteorology officers at the Air Force Administrative College, Coimbatore.

Timeline: How to Track Notifications

Notification timing differs by scheme, so watch the official portals rather than relying on a fixed calendar:

  • Army (joinindianarmy.nic.in): SSC Tech (the 68th course for April 2027 was notified in July 2026), TGC, JAG and NCC Special Entry are notified separately, often more than once a year.
  • Navy (joinindiannavy.gov.in): SSC officer entries and UES notifications appear through the year.
  • IAF and CDS: AFCAT and CDS are notified by the IAF and UPSC.

Missing a window usually means waiting for the next cycle, so keep your documents ready.

How to Choose the Right Entry for You

  • Engineering graduate: Army SSC Tech or TGC (men), Navy SSC Technical or Executive, or UES if you are still in college.
  • Law graduate: Army or Navy JAG.
  • NCC C Certificate holder (any graduation): The NCC Special Entry of the Army, Navy or IAF.
  • Any graduate with no NCC or engineering degree: CDS (including SSC NT) or AFCAT are your main routes.
  • Class 12 pass, still in school or college: NDA, or TES if you have PCM and JEE Main.

SSC officers serve for a fixed term, and may be considered for Permanent Commission as per the policy in force. TGC gives a Permanent Commission directly.

FAQs

Can I join the Indian Army as an officer after graduation without appearing for CDS?
Yes. The Army's direct SSB entries for graduates are SSC Tech and TGC for engineers, NCC Special Entry for NCC C Certificate holders, and JAG for law graduates. Army SSC Non-Technical, however, is filled through the UPSC CDS exam.

Which entry suits engineering graduates who want to skip a written exam?
In the Army, SSC Tech (men and women) and TGC (men only) shortlist candidates on engineering marks and send them to the SSB. In the Navy, SSC Executive and Technical entries and the University Entry Scheme shortlist on degree marks before the SSB. Check each notification for the exact process.

What is the JAG Entry and who qualifies?
JAG Entry is for law graduates in the Army (and the Navy has its own law entry). Candidates need an LLB (3-year or 5-year) with at least 55 percent, must be 21 to 27 years old and eligible to register as an advocate. Recent Army notifications have also asked for a valid CLAT PG score, so check the current notification.

Can NCC C Certificate holders join the Army, Navy and Air Force through special entry?
Yes. Each service runs its own NCC Special Entry with its own conditions. Army NCC Special Entry needs a C Certificate with at least B grade and a graduation with at least 50 percent. The IAF's NCC Special Entry (Flying) needs an Air Wing C Certificate. Check each service's notification.

What is the difference between Short Service Commission and Permanent Commission?
Short Service Commission is a fixed-tenure commission, typically 10 years extendable to 14 in the Army. Permanent Commission is a career to retirement age. TGC gives a Permanent Commission directly, while SSC officers may be considered for it as per the policy in force.
