CDS Academy Preference: How to Fill Your Service Preference Form

CDS Service Preference How to Set Your Choice of Academy and Why it Matters

Learn how to set your CDS academy preference for IMA, INA, AFA and OTA. Understand the official preference rules, eligibility, vacancies and how merit affects final allocation.

Choosing your CDS academy preference is an important part of the UPSC Combined Defence Services examination application. Your preference order indicates which services and courses you want to join, but your choices must also follow the official rules for each academy.

A common mistake is to rank IMA, INA, AFA and OTA based only on reputation or the number of vacancies. The correct approach is to check your eligibility, understand the commission offered by each academy, and follow the specific preference instructions in the notification. This guide explains how to fill your CDS service preference form for 2026 and what candidates targeting CDS 2027 should keep in mind.

What Is CDS Academy Preference?

CDS academy preference is the order in which you indicate the services or courses you want to join through the Combined Defence Services examination. The four main academy options are the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA) and Officers Training Academy (OTA).

Your preference is considered along with your merit position, eligibility, medical fitness, suitability and available vacancies. It does not guarantee admission to your first choice, even if you clear the written examination and receive an SSB recommendation.

Do not assume that an ineligible first choice will always be automatically skipped and the remaining preferences processed without consequences. The CDS notification contains specific rules for certain preferences, particularly AFA and OTA. Read these rules before submitting your form.

These are general requirements. Age, marital status, gender, educational conditions and other eligibility rules vary by course. Check the relevant UPSC notification before deciding which choices to enter.

Indian Military Academy Dehradun (IMA)

IMA trains candidates to become officers in the Indian Army under the Permanent Commission route. It may suit candidates whose main goal is a long-term Army career. Candidates should check the notification's age, graduation and marital-status requirements before selecting IMA.

Indian Naval Academy (INA)

INA prepares candidates for officer roles in the Indian Navy. The CDS entry requires an engineering degree, so a general graduation degree alone does not meet this educational requirement.

Air Force Academy (AFA)

AFA is the training route for eligible candidates seeking to become officers in the Indian Air Force through CDS. Its educational and medical requirements are specific, and candidates must pay particular attention to the preference rule: AFA must be selected as the first preference by candidates who wish to join it. The UPSC notification states that AFA selected as a second or later preference will be treated as invalid.

Officers Training Academy Chennai (OTA)

OTA trains candidates for the Indian Army's Short Service Commission route. Under CDS, eligible male and female candidates can apply for the relevant OTA entry, subject to the notification's conditions. The preference instructions differ by candidate category, so do not copy another candidate's preference order without checking the rules.

How to Fill the CDS Preference Form Correctly

Follow these steps when completing the application on the official UPSC portal.

1. Check Which Academies You Are Eligible For

Review the age, educational qualification, gender and marital-status requirements for each academy. Do not select an academy simply because it has fewer or more vacancies. Your choices should reflect the courses for which you can actually be considered.

2. Decide Which Service You Genuinely Want

Think about the kind of commission and career you want. IMA, INA and AFA offer Permanent Commission routes through the relevant CDS entries, while OTA offers the Short Service Commission route. Your service preference should reflect your career goal, not just a perceived difference in prestige.

3. Follow the AFA First-Preference Rule

If you want to be considered for AFA, put it first. According to the CDS notification, selecting AFA as the second, third or later choice will be treated as invalid. This is an important exception to general advice about ranking academies.

4. Follow the OTA Rule for Male Candidates

If a male candidate wants to be considered for OTA as well as Permanent Commission courses at IMA, INA or AFA, OTA should be entered as the last preference. The notification states that OTA will otherwise be treated as the last choice even if the candidate places it higher.

If a male candidate is applying for the Army Short Service Commission through OTA only, OTA should be the sole choice. Women candidates applying through the relevant CDS entry are considered for Short Service Commission at OTA and should indicate OTA as their only choice, in line with the applicable notification.

5. Enter the Choices You Want to Be Considered For

The notification advises male candidates to indicate as many preferences as they wish, subject to the special rules. Candidates are generally considered only for the courses they have

selected, subject to the provisions in the notification.

Do not leave the preference section blank. Equally, do not select a course you would not be willing to join simply because you think it might improve your chances.

6. Review Your Choices Before Submitting

UPSC states that requests to add or change preferences after submission will not be entertained. Review the order, confirm that AFA and OTA rules have been followed, and check all other application details before submitting the form.
